The AGM-129 ACM is a subsonic, long range, cruise missile designed to carry a W80 nuclear warhead. The US Air Force requires ACMs to hit deep inside enemy's territory located and heavily defended targets. In late 1980s the Soviet Union was fielding weapon systems with a heavy anti-cruise missile capability. SA-10 and SA-12 Surface-to-Air missiles and SU-27 fighters provided anti-cruise missile capability.
AGM-129 features stealth airframe, improved survivability, better accuracy and greater range than AGM-86 ALCM missiles. The B-52H Stratofortress bomber is the only aircraft in the US inventory designated to carry the AGM-129 missile. This bomber carries this missile externally. Initial procurement of ACMs was about 2,000 units, but undisclosed problems concerning ACM's performance the total procurement was reduced to 460 missiles. Final deliveries of ACM missiles to the US Air Force were in 1993. The US Air Force de-militarized the ACM missile in 2012.
